Como City: Cathedral, Brunate Funicular and Lake Promenade
Updated October 16, 2026 · 5 min read
Como city deserves at least half a day; a full day lets you add Brunate without rushing the cathedral and waterfront. Start in the historic centre, walk to the lake, then decide about the funicular according to visibility and queues.
Morning: cathedral and old centre
Como Cathedral stands beside the Broletto in the compact centre. The city tourism office dates construction from 1396, with work continuing into the eighteenth century. Tourist visits normally pause or narrow around services, so check the cathedral’s current schedule and behave as in an active place of worship, not a museum with guaranteed access.
From Piazza Duomo, wander through the old streets before heading towards Piazza Cavour. This is a city walk, not a checklist: the cathedral façade, medieval street pattern and lakefront are close enough to explore without transport.
Midday: the promenade
Walk west along the shore if you want villas and gardens rather than shopping streets. Como’s official tourism site describes the lakeside route towards Villa Olmo as a promenade lined with neoclassical villas. How far you go should depend on heat, mobility and the time reserved for Brunate.
Lunch near the centre keeps the afternoon flexible. Avoid driving between these sights: parking and traffic add difficulty to a route that works naturally on foot.
Afternoon: Brunate, if the view is clear
The Como–Brunate funicular leaves from Piazza De Gasperi and reaches the hillside village in a few minutes. The reward is elevation, not instant wilderness. Brunate has streets, villas and viewpoints; the Volta Lighthouse is farther on and requires additional walking or local transport.
Queues can absorb the time saved by the short ride. On a hazy or wet day, staying in Como for the promenade and museums may be the better choice. Check the operating notice before walking to the lower station.
A packaged alternative
The Lake Como boat trip with Brunate funicular and scenic views lasts 2 hours and costs from €54. It combines a boat element with Brunate, but it does not replace a considered visit to the cathedral and old centre. Choose it when coordination matters more than setting your own pace.
For more water-based options, compare Lake Como boat trips. For most visitors, however, the best Como day remains simple: cathedral in the morning, promenade after lunch and Brunate only when the weather earns the ascent.
