Lake Como Boat Tour: Wooden, Shared or Private?
Updated October 16, 2026 · 6 min read
For most visitors, a shared cruise is the sensible first boat trip on Lake Como. It delivers the water-level villa views without charging one party for the whole boat. Choose a classic wooden boat when style and photographs matter enough to justify the premium. Book privately only when route control, privacy or a special occasion is the point.
The useful comparison
| Boat trip | From | Reviews | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium shared cruise from Varenna | €39.90 | 1,005 | lowest-cost reviewed option |
| Premium shared boat trip | €49.41 | 428 | a shared departure with a broader time choice |
| Classic wooden boat cruise | €63 | 536 | atmosphere and photographs |
| Classic private boat trip | €359 | 401 | privacy and route control |
Prices are starting prices from the booking page, not promises for every date or group size. Private charters can look expensive per booking and less extreme per person when a group fills the boat. Confirm the passenger limit rather than dividing by an assumed capacity.
Departure point matters more than the boat label
A departure from Varenna or Bellagio puts you close to the central-lake triangle and its dense concentration of recognisable shorelines. It fits naturally into a day that already includes the public ferry between Varenna, Bellagio and Menaggio. A departure from Como suits travellers sleeping in the city, but more of the outing may be spent covering the southern arm.
Do not book the prettiest vessel before checking the meeting point. Lake roads are slow at busy times, parking is scarce in the famous villages and public-ferry schedules change seasonally. The best boat is often the one you can reach calmly.
Shared cruise: the default
The Varenna premium cruise begins at €39.90 and has the largest review base in this comparison. That combination makes it the strongest default. The compromise is obvious: departure time, seating and route are shared with strangers. A shared boat is also less suitable when your group needs a guaranteed boarding arrangement or a highly specific stop.
The other premium shared trip begins at €49.41. Compare the actual duration and departure point shown for your date; “premium” is not a standard category and does not by itself tell you what is included.
Wooden boat: paying for the setting
The classic wooden boat cruise starts at €63. The premium pays for the visual character of the boat as well as the ride. That makes sense for couples, photography and a first visit where the vessel is part of the memory. It makes less sense if you mainly want efficient transport between towns; the public ferry does that job more cheaply and with more independence.
Private charter: when it is worth it
At €359, the private classic boat is a different product rather than a small upgrade. It is worthwhile for proposals, family groups that value privacy, or travellers who want to discuss the route with the captain. Ask what can genuinely be customised, what happens in poor weather and whether stops are included or merely viewed from the water.
For most visitors, book the premium shared cruise from Varenna. Choose wood for character and private for control, not because either label automatically means a better view.
