Kayaking, Horse Riding or Bellano Gorge: Active Lake Como
Updated October 16, 2026 · 5 min read
Choose Bellano Gorge for a short, weather-aware stop, kayaking for independence on the water, and horse riding for a guided countryside experience. These activities are not substitutes in the same place: Bellano is on the eastern shore, Colico is at the lake’s northern end, and kayak rentals depend on their own launch points.
Bellano Gorge: the simplest short activity
The Bellano Gorge entry ticket costs from €11.50. The official site describes a gorge cut by the Pioverna, viewed from stairs and footbridges. That makes it dramatic but also means wet surfaces, confined passages and steps. Check current opening and access information before travelling; do not assume it is suitable for every pushchair or wheelchair.
Bellano works well with a train journey or a longer eastern-shore day. It is a poor reason to drive across the lake solely for one brief visit. If you are already combining Bellano with Varenna, the geography is much more sensible.
Kayaking: freedom comes with conditions
Kayaking gives you a low viewpoint and control over pace, but wind, swell and boat traffic matter. Rental operators set their own experience, age and weather rules, so read the booking page instead of assuming that calm water near shore makes every departure suitable.
Ask where you launch, whether a life jacket and briefing are included, and what happens if conditions deteriorate. A rental is not the same as a guided trip. Beginners who want route judgement and local instruction should choose a guided option when available.
Horse riding from Colico
The horse ride from Colico runs for 1–2 hours and costs from €59. The described route crosses fields and woods near the northern end of Lake Como, with a possible beach stop subject to access conditions.
This is the most location-specific choice. It suits travellers already staying in the north or willing to build the day around Colico. Check rider requirements, clothing and the operator’s current participation rules before booking; the available information does not justify inventing one universal minimum age.
Which one should you choose?
Pick Bellano Gorge when you want a compact attraction that fits beside another stop. Pick kayaking when being on the lake matters and you can adapt to conditions. Pick riding when the guided animal experience is the purpose of the journey.
For a wider overview, compare things to do at Lake Como. None of these is a reliable rainy-day fallback: high water can affect a gorge, wind affects kayaking, and outdoor riding changes with conditions. Confirm on the day rather than treating a reservation as a weather guarantee.
