Villa Carlotta, Villa Cipressi or Villa Monastero?
Updated October 16, 2026 · 6 min read
Choose Villa Carlotta for the fullest museum-and-botanical-garden visit. Choose Villa Monastero for a long, narrow lakeside garden in Varenna. Choose Villa Cipressi for a compact romantic garden that fits easily beside Varenna’s lanes and ferry stop. Trying to see all three in one day turns gardens into checkpoints.
Three gardens, three different days
| Garden | Location | Booking-page price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Villa Carlotta museum and garden | Tremezzina | €17.50 | art plus the broadest garden visit |
| Villa Cipressi gardens | Varenna | €20 | a shorter romantic stop |
| Villa Monastero with aperitif | Varenna | €65 | a waterside botanical walk with an aperitif |
Opening calendars and ticket combinations vary, so use the official property pages for the day of your visit. The listing for Villa Monastero is a different product from the other two: it is a visit that includes an aperitif, priced at €65. The villa itself sells garden-only and garden-plus-house-museum admission through its official site, and online tickets are booked for a chosen date, so check the date before you pay.
Villa Carlotta: best for one substantial visit
Villa Carlotta is the clearest choice when gardens are the main event. Its Tremezzina setting places it opposite Bellagio, and the booking-page ticket combines the museum and garden from €17.50. Allow enough time to climb, pause at viewpoints and actually look inside; rushing through only to catch another villa wastes what distinguishes it.
Its drawback is logistics. It is not in Varenna, so combining it with the two Varenna gardens requires a ferry plan. In high season, queues and a missed sailing can erase the neat schedule drawn at breakfast.
Villa Monastero: best long lakeside promenade
Villa Monastero stretches along the shore just beyond central Varenna. The sequence of planted terraces, architectural features and open lake views makes the walk itself the attraction. It is the stronger Varenna choice when you want more time outdoors and do not mind a linear route.
Check whether you want the House Museum as well as the botanical garden, and whether the aperitif version is what you are buying. Buying the wrong admission and assuming every room is included is an avoidable disappointment.
Villa Cipressi: best compact addition
Villa Cipressi suits a day already centred on Varenna. Its terraced garden is close to the village core and pairs well with lunch, the waterfront and a ferry onward. At €20, it costs slightly more than the larger Villa Carlotta visit; its advantage is convenience and atmosphere rather than maximum ground covered.
Can you combine them?
Villa Cipressi and Villa Monastero are the natural pair because both are in Varenna. Visit one slowly or combine both if garden design is your priority. Villa Carlotta pairs more naturally with Tremezzo, Lenno or Villa del Balbianello on the western shore.
For a first garden visit, book Villa Carlotta museum and garden. Choose one of the Varenna properties instead when minimising transport matters more than seeing the largest variety.
