Best Time to Visit Lake Como: When the Gardens, Ferries and Boats All Work
Updated October 17, 2026 · 5 min read
For most visitors the best months are April to early June and September to mid-October: gardens are open, the full ferry network runs and the lake is not at its midsummer busiest. If you can only come in July or August, plan around early mornings and book timed tickets. If you come after mid-November, expect a different, much quieter lake.
A first purchase that works in nearly any open month is the Villa Carlotta museum and garden ticket from €17.50.
What the gardens tell you
The clearest calendar on the lake is Villa Carlotta’s. In 2026 it opens from 20 March to 18 October, daily from 10 am to 7 pm with last tickets at 6 pm. From 19 October to 8 November hours shrink to 10 am–6 pm, and from 14 November to 8 December the villa opens at weekends only, 10 am–4 pm. Its 2027 dates are not yet published, so confirm them on the official site before you plan a spring trip.
Travel guides put the azalea and rhododendron peak in April and May, which is why spring is the classic garden season. That is a guide’s estimate rather than a promise: flowering shifts with the weather, so do not build a non-refundable trip around one week.
What the ferries tell you
Navigazione Laghi publishes seasonal timetables. For 2026 the summer table ran from 1 July to 4 October and an autumn table from 5 October to 1 November. The pattern is what matters: more sailings in summer, fewer on either side, and a thin offer once November arrives. Services can also be suspended in bad weather or strong swell.
That affects how ambitious a day can be. A three-town ferry hop is realistic in June; in late October the same plan leaves less slack for a missed boat.
Month by month, in practice
| Period | Gardens | Ferries | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Late March to May | open; flowering season for many beds | fewer sailings than in July | gardens are the main reason you came |
| June | open | close to the full timetable | you want long days and long light |
| July–August | open, busiest | most sailings, longest queues | you need school-holiday dates |
| September to mid-October | open | summer then autumn timetable | calmer water, softer light, fewer crowds |
| Late October to early November | Villa Carlotta shorter hours | autumn timetable | you accept an early finish |
| Mid-November to March | reduced or closed | thin service, often reduced further | you want a quiet lakeside walk, not villas |
Villa del Balbianello needs separate checking
Balbianello runs its own calendar. Published sources describe an opening from around mid-March to the end of December with Monday and Wednesday closures, but dates and closing days move, so check the property’s official page for your date. The park ticket costs €15 and is listed at one hour (see the table), which makes it easy to fit into a day that already has a ferry in it.
Boats across the seasons
Cruises suit the shoulder months best because the water is quieter and the villas are easier to see without crowded decks. The classic wooden boat is the intimate choice, with room for up to 8 guests on the booking page; the photo tour is the best reviewed of the group.
| Option | Duration | From | Reviews | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Villa Carlotta ticket | self-paced | €17.50 | 4.6 (972) | spring and early autumn garden days |
| Balbianello park ticket | 1 hour | €15 | 4.6 (538) | a short stop on the western shore |
| Varenna shared cruise | 1.5 hours | €39.90 | 4.2 (1,005) | the cheapest first look from the water |
| Villas photo tour | 1–4 hours | €54 | 4.7 (2,196) | the best-reviewed trip on the water |
| Classic wooden boat | 1–4 hours | €63 | 4.6 (536) | a small boat and a slower pace |
Who should not come when
Garden lovers should avoid November to March, when the main attraction is reduced or shut. Anyone hoping for a long, relaxed ferry-hopping day should not choose the first week of November either. Families tied to school holidays can still enjoy July and August, but should treat the early morning as the usable part of the day.
The recommendation
Come in late April, May or September if you can. Spend the garden day at Villa Carlotta, then add one boat trip rather than three. For a first cruise the Varenna shared cruise is the cheapest, and the villas photo tour is the better-rated step up. More options are on the Lake Como boat tours page.
