Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio in One Day: Ferry or Tour?
Updated October 16, 2026 · 6 min read
Use the public ferry if you are already staying in the central lake area and want freedom. Choose a tour from Como if transport coordination is the part you do not want to manage. Three towns fit in one long day, but two towns usually make the better holiday: there is time for a garden, lunch and an unhurried waterfront rather than three quick photographs.
Ferry and tour solve different problems
The official ferry network connects Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Cadenabbia in the central-lake triangle. A circular ticket can allow intermediate stops within the covered ferry ports, but check the valid route and current fare before buying. Timetables change by season, weekday and holiday pattern.
The Lugano and Bellagio day trip with boat cruise starts in Como at €97.50 and lasts 8.5 hours. It is highly reviewed, but it does not reproduce an independent Bellagio–Varenna–Menaggio day: part of its value and time goes to Lugano and organised transport. Book it for the escorted itinerary, not merely to avoid reading a ferry timetable.
The best independent order
Start in whichever town is easiest from your accommodation. Varenna is practical for travellers arriving by train; Bellagio works for those already on the peninsula; Menaggio suits the western shore. Then cross to a second town and treat the third as optional.
A balanced day might give the morning to Varenna, the middle of the day to Bellagio and late afternoon to Menaggio. The flaw is that meal queues, garden visits and ferry queues all peak in the same hours. Reversing the popular order or dropping one stop often produces a calmer day.
What each town contributes
Varenna is the easiest place to combine a village walk with Villa Monastero or Villa Cipressi. Its narrow lanes and waterfront reward walking slowly, but steps make luggage awkward.
Bellagio has the busiest visitor infrastructure and the most famous stepped lanes. It is also where a short visit can disappear into queues. Decide before arrival whether your priority is Villa Melzi, the old centre or lunch; doing all three between ferries is optimistic.
Menaggio offers a broad promenade and a more open pause on the western shore. It is often the first town cut from an overfilled plan, which is precisely why it can feel less frantic than Bellagio.
The timetable is part of the plan
Navigazione Laghi advises arriving around 20 minutes before departure and notes that summer and holiday ticket-office queues can be substantial. Sailings may be suspended in bad weather or strong swell. Read the official notices on the day and keep a later connection in reserve.
Do not take a car around the triangle merely to avoid boats. Narrow shore roads, traffic and parking can consume more time than the ferry saves. If your wider trip genuinely needs a car, compare Lake Como car hire only after checking whether your accommodation provides parking.
The recommendation
For independent travellers, choose two towns and use the ferry. Add the third only when the current timetable leaves real slack. Choose the Lugano and Bellagio day trip when you are based in Como and prefer a structured cross-border day to a self-directed village circuit.
